SENTINELS OF TENDERNESS
At Massa Horses, some stories go beyond sporting performance and highlight the deep bonds between horses and humans. Such is the story of orphaned fillies saved by the kindness of experienced mares and a devoted team.
A foster mother
Tempestade, 25, and her daughter Senhora de Massa, 19, enjoy a peaceful retirement in the Crau pastures. When one of our foals became orphaned too early, two adoption attempts failed. That’s when Senhora de Massa showed extraordinary instinct.
With gentle medical stimulation and her innate kindness, she accepted this new role. Senhora became a “foster mother,” offering protection and tenderness so the foal could grow up surrounded by love and balance.
The story of the Zouzoupettes
Two other fillies, orphaned after the sudden loss of their adoptive dam, also found comfort thanks to our team. Day and night, every two hours, they were bottle-fed and cared for with human warmth.
They later joined a herd of two broodmares, selected for their calm temperament. Even without nursing, these mares provided essential presence, guidance, and security for the young fillies.
A chain of protection
Soon, the filly adopted by Senhora de Massa will join this group. Our three “Zouzoupettes” will then grow together, nurtured by a cocoon of protection and tenderness.
Thanks to the dedication of the team and the kindness of our mares, these orphaned fillies are rediscovering a life full of play, hope, and love.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible.
